Firm textured, medium coloured, moist and
succulent flesh.

Dark metallic blue-black to grey on the back of the body, shading to silver on the sides of the belly. Distinguished from Hapuku/Groper by a blunt snout and laterally compressed body with large eyes set low in the head. Belong to the Centrolophidae family. Caught year round, by trawl and longline around most of New Zealand, near rocky areas in depths of 100 to 500 metres.
