On the evening of Tuesday 14 January, one of Moana New Zealand’s contract fishing vessels took on water and sank near Moturekareka Island. The lives and safety of our contract fishers are our highest priority, and we are thankful the crew were retrieved late last night and returned home safely.
We understand a distress call was dispatched to the Coast Guard as the vessel took on water. It is unknown at this time what caused this issue on board the fishing vessel but a full investigation will be undertaken.
The fishing vessel was on its way back to port with fish in the hold that was lost during this incident. MPI were notified immediately of the lost fish.
Over the coming days, some people may notice dead fish and debris in the water around Moturekareka Island and surrounding harbours, which may be distressing. However, the skipper did all he could to ensure the safety of his crew, save the vessel and its catch under extreme circumstances.
The skipper and Moana New Zealand continue to cooperate with MPI, Maritime NZ and all involved in the investigation into this incident.
