Moana New Zealand is paving the way for sustainability in the fishing sector. Having recently been recognised for embracing plant-based packaging technologies, Moana is proud to be evidencing an action-based approach to tackling sustainability issues.

“The various government agencies are impressed that Moana has embraced new technology which is not only able to be recycled but is also less reliant on traditional oil-based packaging,” reports Moana’s long term sustainable packaging partner, Lawrence Olsen (Managing Director, Exemplar NZ Ltd.).

The technology used by Moana is Plantic, a plant-based packaging solution derived from corn starch that offers a sustainable packaging option with high barrier performance, which means that Plantic is better for the environment, and for product shelf-life stability too.

“Our move to embrace Plantic is a reflection of our commitment to kaitiakitanga and solving key sustainability issues,” says Michelle Cherrington, Group Communications and Sustainability Manager at Moana New Zealand. “Not only does Plantic film technology deliver for the environment, but our consumers too by keeping our kaimoana fresher, for longer.”

Features and benefits of Plantic include.

• Contains up to 80% renewable content.
• Uses up to 40% less energy compared to conventional polymers.
• Significantly reduces environmental impacts as it is derived from plant-based materials.
