In a recent review conducted by Terra Moana Ltd and leading fisheries researcher Dr Stephen Eayrs, Moana New Zealand contract fishers were found to use unexpected innovations and practices voluntarily to reduce seabed contact. The experts were impressed by the enthusiasm and progress made by all fishers involved in this study. The review also found a need to create a working group to support fishers to establish a coordinated approach with a plan of action, to further minimise fishing gear impact on the seabed.
