With the appointment of three experienced directors, Dylan Lawrence, Jamie Tuuta, and Paki Rawiri, Moana New Zealand is building an even stronger, more dynamic, and connected board.
Rachel Taulelei, Chair of Moana New Zealand, says these appointments are a reflection of Moana’s whakapapa as a Māori business, “we’re owned by Māori, we’re led by Māori, and we support Māori communities across Aotearoa as we work with iwi to continually enhance the value of their commercial assets.”

“To excel as a Māori business”, Taulelei says, “we require Māori voices and perspectives at the table”.
“Fortunately, the pool of Māori governance talent to draw upon is deep, and the candidates selected have a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with Moana and contribute to the growth of this pakihi.”
Dylan Lawrence (Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Ranginui, Tūhourangi) is the first of the three directors to join Moana. Dylan is currently the General Manager of Investment at New Zealand Trade & Enterprise (NZTE) and a current director of Ngāti Raukawa-ki-te-Tonga AHC.

Dylan says, “I’m hugely excited to be joining the Board of Moana. It embodies our mindset – that our strength is not as an individual but as a collective. It is a platform for us to tell our story about how we, as Māori, conduct business. It is a connection to Tangaroa and a way to derive economic benefit back to our iwi and hapū. I see many streams of opportunity for Moana, and I look forward to working with the Board and management team to see the organisation flourish.”
Next to join the board will be Jamie Tuuta (Ngāti Mutunga, Ngāti Tama, Ngāti Maru, Te Ati Awa, Taranaki Tūturu). Jamie is an experienced director with deep commercial and governance experience across various industries and sectors, providing him with a broad perspective and insight.

Jamie says, “Moana is the preeminent collective Iwi commercial vehicle. Moana has and will continue to play an important role in the fishing industry and the broader iwi commercial landscape. I have a passion and commitment to Iwi and Māori success in the fisheries space and look forward to once again serving iwi throughout the country and contributing to the ongoing success of Moana.”
The final new appointment to the board is Paki Rawiri (Waikato, Ngāpuhi). Paki brings 25 years of experience in iwi-owned-and-operated fishing businesses as the general manager of Waikato and Tainui waka fisheries companies.

Paki says, “I see our future as a company embedded in the aspirations of our iwi and hapori. I am committed to working with our iwi leadership and iwi fishers, who whakapapa to this resource to understand better how Moana NZ can support how iwi express their own Mana Motuhake”.
